Breaking my 100 Day Juice & Water Fast

October 5th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

Here’s a video I made of myself giving my thoughts on the fast, some highlights of the fast and of course, you get to see me eat my first solid food in 100 days (upon request, I’ve typed out the major points below plus a few extra bits I forgot to mention in the video):

Can you believe it? I haven’t put a solid piece of food in my mouth for almost one third of a year! Since June 27, 2009 I have been on a juice and water fast. I’d like to say it was 100% raw, but it turned out being high raw. Sometimes it was hard to have freshly made juice from my juicer due to work and travel commitments. At times like that, I had to resort to high-quality store-bought juices. So, it wasn’t a “juice feast” either. But I plan on buying a better juicer that juices leafy greens and wheatgrass and planning it a bit better. Then maybe next year I’ll do it again, and do it 100% raw. Yeah!

This started out rather by chance. At first, I got my new juicer on June 26 and was having fun juicing. Of course, I had already been going raw for a couple of months at that point. Then I went all day June 27 on just juice. When I realized I had gone all day on just juice and didn’t feel weak, I decided to do a 3 day juice fast. Which turned into a 7 days. Then I thought, why not go for 100 days? I thought I could at least make it to 20 days, but that was so easy that I decided to go for 100 days like my mentor, raw foodist and one of my new best friends, Philip McCluskey had done. I want to thank Philip for inspiring me to do this and for giving me some tips and guidance along the way. Thanks bro! :)

So, today was Day 101 of my juice fast. Time to break the fast. I did it with the requisite soaked prunes (five in total), plus the water they had been soaking in overnight. On one hand, I didn’t want to break the fast as I was enjoying it so much and had adapted to it – kind of like how Angela Stokes felt when she broke her fast. And like both Philip and Angela, I must agree that it feels so strange to put solid food into your mouth, chew and swallow after just drinking juice and water for so long. After doing much research on the net about long-terms fasts, many people consider 7 or 20 days to be long-term, and 40 days to be outrageously long. Very few people seem to be doing a 92 or 100 day juice fast or juice feast. So I guess I’m now a member of a small group of people who have done this!

Many of my friends and family members thought I was crazy. And maybe I am. (a little bit, haha)! A lot of people told me to be careful and that this was dangerous (DISCLAIMER: Do not try this at home, folks! Please hear me, I don’t want to be responsible for any mishaps, so make sure you do this under qualified supervision). But ironically, the people who were most concerned about this were those who have never fasted a day and/or are not raw. I appreciate the concern, but I felt quite comfortable and reassured when encouraged by several raw foodists who have also fasted long term.

I’m so happy with the detoxification benefits, along with the 5 colon cleanses I had done at Clinique Hydro Dtox (thank you Sanaz & crew)! And of course I’m happy with the 82 pounds released during the fast. That’s about 37 kilograms or almost 6 stone. And that’s just during the fast! At first, I was losing about one pound per day for the first 3 weeks, then it slowed down. Some days I lost half a pound or less. Some days nothing. But every week I weighed less than I did the previous week. Prior to doing the fast, I had some weeks where I lost a bit more and some weeks a bit less. It’s hard to say how much weight would have been released had I not done the fast, but it likely would have been less.

    Hey Peter,

Great to see you back online. I am so proud of you for sticking to this juice fast. Not a very easy thing to do but you did it.

One suggestion about juicing you may or may not know about… I bought myself a cheap juicer at a discount store a couple of weeks ago. A cheap one because I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep up with the juicing and didn’t want to spend a lot of money. Turns out I got what I paid for, it juiced but had to be cleaned very often. I went to making smoothies in my blender then. That was okay but sometimes was too much to drink and I just wanted the pure juice. Then I found an idea on a blog to blend up veggies or fruit in a blender but then gently strain it out through a nut milk bag. So I’ve ordered myself a bag and am going to try juicing that way.

Keep on posting and keep up the great work. You are doing fabulous.

    All the best,

    Maria

Thanks Maria! Yes, I’m really proud of myself for sticking through the 100 day juice fast. Quite an accomplishment that I’ll remember for the rest of my life!

I hear you on the juicers. I bought a cheap used one. It works OK, but needs to be cleaned often. Then I bought a used Champion juicer for $60 on Craigslist. Much better quality, but back then I didn’t know about juicing wheatgrass and leafy greens. This is the only downfall to the Champion juicer – it doesn’t work well for things like that. Ironically, the cheaper juicer does! But I am going to get a brand new Samson or Greenstar juicer in a few months or sooner. Those have a good reputation for juicing everything.

I’ve heard of the nutmilk bag method of juicing but have never tried it. Definitely better than using a cheap juicer! If I didn’t already have the Champion juicer, I’d probably try the nutmilk bag myself. Good luck and have fun with your juicing!

I’ll be sure to give regular updates at the next milestone I reach or whenever something interesting or significant happens.

    Hey Peter,
I’ve been following you for about a month now. I found your website from Phillip’s Page. You are doing great with your weight loss, very happy for you! I’m eating more raw now and have lost some weight as well. You inspired me to get serious about my weight, and have lost 15 lbs. I’m now 240 lbs and am aiming for 200 as a target. Looking forward to more videos!

Hi Dinah, that’s great news! 15 lbs lost in 1 month is excellent. I found going raw, or even partly raw, really made it easy for me to lose weight too, and keep it off. Keep going – only 40 more pounds to go – it won’t be long before you get there! So glad you found Philip’s blog and mine too. Keep us posted with your progress – I love hearing people’s raw success stories. Have an awesome day! :)

    Hey Peter,
Just wanted to give you an update. I’ve now lost 30 pounds since September! Today is official! I now weigh 225. I’ve been about 50-60% raw and I am enjoying the way I eat. I find that I’m more satisfied eating raw than cooked, somehow it just has more taste!
Hope to see an update on your progress soon :)

Wow, that is awesome, Dinah! Isn’t it great going raw and losing all that fat? I am so happy for you! :) Definitely keep me updated!

I actually do have a new video update, but I just need to find time to edit it and upload it – should be done this weekend.

    Hello Peter
I am very happy knowing that you successfully completed 100 days. Please tell me – were you able to move normally during all that time or did you have to stay in one place all the time?

Hi Jose, it was great! I was definitely able to do everything I needed to, although I’ll admit that since I didn’t follow a specific program, towards the end I was lacking greens and had to ensure to get enough. Otherwise there was definitely a lack of energy, but once I got enough greens, I was OK.

Knowing what I know now, that I didn’t know then, I’d have done it differently and followed David and Katrina’s Juice Feasting program (http://recommended.peterdouglasraw.com/juicefeasting). But I’m still really happy with the results. The next time I do this it will be even better!

    Have a rawsome day! :)

    Hello Peter
So are you saying that by taking green juice you would have had more energy? Wowww!!! You just gave me the inspiration to do something similar! Thanks very much for the positive feedback.

Yes, most definitely. I first learned this while listening to several speakers at Raw Spirit East. I heard it from many resources, so I knew there had to be something to it. Although I’d heard it before, I didn’t take it that seriously. But once I started getting more greens (both juiced, and later eating solid raw foods), I definitely noticed more energy. Plus our bodies need greens. The darker the better!

Good luck bro, keep me posted and have a rawsome day! :)

    Hey doug,
I want to start a juice fast soon, but I don’t know where to get the recipes for the right types of fruits and veggies to buy for best results. I’m new to thought of eating raw so if you could please give me some insight.

    Congrats on your sucess!
    Thanks

Hi Chona, I’ve heard it’s better to have been eating raw for a while before doing a long-term juice fast/feast. But maybe a shorter-term version would be OK in the beginning. Honestly, the best source of information for the juice feasting is
    http://recommended.peterdouglasraw.com/juicefeasting

In general, for going raw vegan (and not necessarily a juice feast/fast), organic is best, but to be honest I don’t always get organic. The more leafy greens the better. Easy on the nuts and avocados and not too many sweet fruits. That’s the general gist of it.

    Good luck, keep me posted!
